Braids Done Right: How to Protect Your Hair (Not Damage It)

3 minute read · 04/15/2026 12:38:00

I can always tell when someone’s about to say it.

They sit in the chair and go,

“I’ve been getting braids to grow my hair…”

And then I part their hair.

And I just pause for a second.

Because what I’m seeing?

Tension. Dryness. Breakage.

And now we have to have the conversation.

Let’s Clear This Up First

Braids are called “protective styles.”

But here’s the part people skip:

They’re only protective…

if you do them right.

Otherwise?

They’re just long-term damage in a cute style.

Think of Braids Like a Gym Membership

Having a membership doesn’t make you fit.

Using it properly does.

Same with braids.

Just having them in doesn’t mean your hair is protected.

It’s about:

  1. How they’re installed
  2. How you maintain them
  3. How long you keep them in

That’s the difference between growth… and breakage.

Mistake #1: Too Tight, Too Soon

If your braids hurt on Day 1?

That’s not normal.

That’s damage starting early.

Tight braids can cause:

  1. Tension bumps
  2. Hairline thinning
  3. Long-term traction alopecia

And no, “it’ll loosen in a few days” is not a solution.

Your scalp should not be fighting for its life.

Mistake #2: “Set It and Forget It”

This one gets a lot of people.

You get braids…

And then ignore your hair for weeks.

No moisture.

No scalp care.

No protection at night.

And then wonder why your hair feels dry when you take them out.

Braids don’t replace your routine.

They just change it.

Mistake #3: Leaving Them in Too Long

I know.

You paid for them.

You want to get your money’s worth.

But keeping braids in for too long can lead to:

  1. Matting
  2. Excess shedding
  3. Breakage during takedown

There’s a limit.

And your hair knows when you’ve passed it.

What “Done Right” Actually Looks Like

Let’s simplify it.

Healthy braids =

âś” Not too tight

âś” Clean, healthy scalp before install

âś” Regular scalp care while wearing them

âś” Moisture (yes, even in braids)

âś” Removed at the right time

Simple.

But most people skip at least two of these.

Your Hair Still Needs You

Braids are low maintenance.

Not no maintenance.

Your hair still needs:

  1. Hydration
  2. Protection at night (bonnet or scarf — always)
  3. Gentle handling

Ignoring your hair doesn’t help it grow.

Caring for it does.

Imagine This Instead

You take your braids out…

And your hair feels:

  1. Soft
  2. Strong
  3. Fuller
  4. Healthy

Not dry.

Not tangled.

Not breaking.

That’s how braids are supposed to work.

So Let Me Ask You

Are your braids helping your hair…

Or just hiding the damage for a few weeks?

Because those are two very different things.
