Balayage vs. Highlights: Which One Are You Actually Asking For?

Balayage vs. Highlights: Which One Are You Actually Asking For?

5 minute read · 08/21/2026 09:20:00

I've lost count of how many times someone has shown me a photo and said, “I want this exact color.”

Then I look at the photo, look at their current hair, and look back at the photo.

We have a conversation.

Because sometimes what you think is balayage is actually highlights. And sometimes what you call highlights is basically a whole different situation.

Don't worry. You're not supposed to know the difference. That's our job.

So… What's the Actual Difference?

Let's make this simple.

Balayage is a hand-painted highlighting technique. Instead of creating a uniform pattern from the roots down, the color is strategically placed to create a softer, more blended and dimensional result.

Think sun-kissed.

The goal is usually a more lived-in look where the color blends naturally through your hair.

Highlights, on the other hand, are typically placed in sections throughout the hair to create more consistent brightness and dimension.

Think brighter and more defined.

Neither one is automatically “better.”

They're just different ways of creating a look.

It's kind of like ordering coffee.

You can say, “I want coffee,” and that's technically correct.

But then the barista asks, “What kind?”

Suddenly we're discussing oat milk, extra shots, cold foam, three pumps of vanilla…

Hair color can get like that.

What Are You Actually Trying to Achieve?

This is where things get more interesting.

If you want your hair to look naturally brighter with softer dimension, balayage might be worth discussing.

If you're looking for more noticeable, consistent brightness throughout your hair, traditional highlights might be a better fit.

But there's a catch.

Your current hair matters.

A lot.

Your natural color, previous color, hair condition, length, density and even your hair texture can affect which technique makes the most sense.

That's why bringing in a photo is helpful — but expecting your stylist to copy it pixel-for-pixel isn't always realistic.

Your hair isn't the model's hair.

Unfortunately, your hair didn't get the same lighting, genetics, styling team and probably three hours of preparation before taking that photo.

Here's Where Things Get Confusing

You might actually want a combination.

Yes. Hair has a way of making simple questions complicated.

A stylist might recommend different techniques throughout the hair to create the exact kind of dimension you're after.

Maybe you want brightness around your face but softer dimension throughout the rest of your hair.

Maybe you want to stay darker at the root but have lighter pieces through the lengths.

Maybe you want to look like you just spent three weeks somewhere sunny even though you spent most of the summer sitting in traffic.

That's where customization comes in.

A professional consultation isn't about putting your hair into a category and calling it a day.

It's about figuring out what will actually give you the result you're looking for.

And Then There's Maintenance…

This part gets overlooked.

Let's say you love the idea of being super blonde.

Great.

But how often do you want to visit the salon?

Because the prettiest hair color in the world isn't very helpful if you hate maintaining it.

Balayage is often popular with people who want a more lived-in appearance and softer grow-out.

Highlights can create beautiful brightness, but depending on your desired result, they may require regular maintenance to keep everything looking fresh.

Your stylist can help you figure out what makes sense based on how often you're willing to come in, how you wear your hair and how much maintenance you're comfortable with.

Because your hair shouldn't become a second full-time job.

So…

Which One Should You Get?

Honestly?

Don't choose based on the name. Choose based on the result you want.

Bring your inspiration photos.

Tell your stylist what you love about them.

Tell them what you don't want.

Tell them how much time you're willing to spend maintaining your hair.

And definitely tell them about previous color.

Then let the professional help you decide whether balayage, highlights or a combination of techniques will get you closest to your goal.

Wait, One More Thing…

If you bring a photo to your appointment, bring two or three.

One photo can show the color you love.

Another might show the brightness you want.

And another might show the overall vibe you're going for.

That gives your stylist a much better picture of what you're actually asking for.

And yes, you can still bring the 47 photos you saved at 1 a.m.

We won't judge.

Probably.
