What Actually Happens During a Hair Consultation?

What Actually Happens During a Hair Consultation?

5 minute read · 08/27/2026 09:43:00

There's a moment during almost every new hair appointment when the stylist asks, “So, what are we thinking today?”

And suddenly, you forget every word you've ever learned about hair.

You know you want something different. You have 14 saved photos. You just can't figure out how to explain what you actually want.

That's completely okay. That's what a consultation is for.

First Things First:

We're Going to Talk

A consultation isn't an interrogation.

You don't need to walk into the salon knowing exactly what color, technique, tone, or haircut you want.

In fact, that's kind of the point.

We'll start by talking about what you're hoping to change.

Maybe you're tired of your current color.

Maybe you've been growing your hair out and want a fresh shape.

Maybe you've had the same hairstyle since college and you've finally decided it's time for a personality update.

Whatever it is, tell us.

And don't worry if your explanation is something like:

“I don't know. I just want to look… better?”

We've got you.

Sometimes a conversation tells us more than a technical description ever could.

Then We Talk About Your Hair's History

This part might not be the most exciting, but it's important.

We'll want to know what you've done to your hair.

Have you colored it recently?

Used box dye?

Bleached it?

Had a keratin treatment?

Used extensions?

Gone from blonde to brunette and back again?

Tell us.

Even if you're thinking, “Oh, that was forever ago.”

Your hair may still remember.

Hair color doesn't simply disappear because

you've moved on emotionally.

Previous color and chemical treatments can affect what we can safely do next, which is why your hair history matters when we're planning a transformation.

And yes, honesty is appreciated.

This isn't the time to pretend that box dye never happened.

We already know it did.

Then Comes the Inspiration Photo Investigation

This is one of my favorite parts.

You show us the photo you've been saving.

Then we look at it together.

Instead of simply saying, “Yep, we can do that,” we'll look at what you actually like about it.

Maybe it's the brightness.

Maybe it's the dimension.

Maybe it's the face-framing color.

Maybe it's the softness around the ends.

Maybe you just like how expensive the hair looks.

Honestly, that's useful information too.

The goal isn't necessarily to copy the photo exactly.

It's to figure out what you're drawn to and then translate that into something that works for your hair.

Because your hair has its own texture, length, density, color and history.

We want your version of the inspiration photo — not a photocopy.

Then We Talk About Your Real Life

This might be the most important part.

Because your stylist needs to know what happens after you leave the salon.

Do you wash your hair every day?

Do you work out frequently?

Do you air-dry?

Do you style your hair every morning?

Are you someone who can spend 45 minutes with a round brush, or are you more of a “dry shampoo and pray” person?

No judgment.

We just need to know.

If you want a high-maintenance color but only want to visit the salon twice a year, that's something we should talk about.

If you want a haircut that looks amazing with minimal styling, that's also important.

Your hair should fit your life.

Not become another thing on your to-do list.

And Then We Make a Plan

Once we've talked through your goals, hair history and lifestyle, we can figure out the best way forward.

Sometimes that's one appointment.

Sometimes a transformation needs multiple appointments.

Sometimes we realize that the original idea needs to be adjusted to protect the health of your hair.

And sometimes you discover that something completely different would actually look amazing on you.

That's why consultations matter.

We're not just deciding what we're going to do.

We're figuring out why we're doing it and how we're going to get there.

Wait, One More Thing…

You don't need to be embarrassed if you don't know salon terminology.

Seriously.

You don't have to know the difference between balayage, babylights, foils, glosses, toners and every other word you've seen on Instagram.

You can just say:

“I want my hair to be lighter around my face, but I don't want it to look too blonde.”

Perfect.

That's something we can work with.

Your job isn't to be the stylist.

Your job is to tell us what you want, what you don't want, and what you're willing to maintain.

We'll handle the hair part.
